Grand Slam of Darts preview

It's major season on the PDC Tour as attention now turns to Wolverhampton and the Grand Slam of Darts.

Luke Littler stormed to the title last year, when hammering Martin Lukeman 16-3 in the final, but the unique group-stage format makes it tricky for outright punters with uncertainty as to the shape of the draw come the knockout rounds.

It's no surprise to see the defending Grand Slam champion as the 2-1 favourite in Wolverhampton, but there could be better value away from the Nuke.

Chris Dobey picked up his third title of the season when winning Players Championship 33 last month and Hollywood went on to reach the semi-final of the concluding PC event of the campaign the following day.

The Bedlington boy is inside the top-ten on the Pro Tour averages this term and the 35-year-old heads to Wolverhampton at the top of his game.

There's a school of thought that Hollywood fails to produce his best on the big stage, and maybe more major titles should be in the bag, but Dobey is a former Masters champion and a World Championship, Players Championship finals, European Championship and World Grand Prix semi-finalist.

Dobey is housed in a group containing Damon Heta, Lukeman and Jurjen van der Velde, which doesn't appear the most difficult of sections, and he will avoid Littler until the final, regardless of how the first phase of the competition goes down.

At 25-1, Hollywood can play leading role on the Grand Slam stage.

There's group winner and to qualify betting available to punters at the Grand Slam and there looks to be some generous prices to punt.

Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson, Niko Springer and Beau Graves meet in Group G and, at 5-4, MVG rates a terrible offer to top the section.

Springer won his maiden PDC title at the Hungarian Darts Trophy in September, where the German beat Gian van Veen, Heta, Rob Cross, Luke Humphries, Josh Rock and Danny Noppert on his way to glory.

Those are top-level opponents being dismissed, and Springer has a peak level of performance, which makes the 11-2 to win Group G and 7-4 to qualify look huge.

Ricky Evans found some form in the closing Players Championship events of the campaign and the Northamptonshire arrowsmith looks overpriced to win Group D.

Rapid Ricky put up averages of 103.82, 100.38 and 98.89 in recent PC events and has a ceiling ability to eclipse section rivals Gerwyn Price, James Wade and Stefann Bellmont.
