Grand Slam of Darts day two predictions
German Niko Springer was well fancied to progress from Group G before the tournament got underway and a 5-3 victory over two-time former world champion Gary Anderson was a fine way to start his campaign.
Springer has enjoyed a breakout season on the PDC Tour, as he reached the final of the Dutch Darts Championship and then went one better by taking the title at the Hungarian Darts Trophy, beating Luke Humphries, Josh Rock and Danny Noppert in the final session of action.
Van Gerwen narrowly saw off Beau Greaves 5-4 in his Grand Slam opener and although he averaged over three points more than Springer did in his win over Anderson, the once Mighty Mike could be vulnerable to a defeat on Sunday evening.
The aforementioned Greaves is already a three-time world champion at the tender age of 21 and showed exactly what she is capable of by recently beating Luke Littler in the semi-final of the World Youth Championships.
Her opening performance in Wolverhampton enhanced her reputation further as she averaged 101.47 in her deciding-leg defeat to Van Gerwen, while Anderson was perhaps unfortunate to average 99.88 and still lose 5-3 to Springer, who threw a mere 93.63.
Should Greaves throw at the same level again, she is well equipped to push Anderson to the limit and she may have just enough to get over the winning line.

Former world champion Michael Smith has endured a torrid season which has seen him tumble down the world rankings, so a 5-3 victory in his opening match against Nathan Aspinall will have come as a bit of a boost.
However, Smith averaged just 88.21 against a strangely subdued Aspinall and now takes on world number one Humphries, who enjoyed the easiest of starts as he saw off Alex Spellman 5-0.
Humphries averaged 95.13 in that win and has a few more gears to go through.
If he steps up by a notch or two, he is very capable of bringing Smith crashing back down to earth with a comprehensive win.
