German Masters: darts quarter-finals betting preview, tips & TV details
Rob Cross can expect a tough test from home hope Gabriel Clemens
ITV4, 8pm Sunday
Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson, the front two in the German Masters betting pre-tournament, were dumped out in the opening round by two home talents who benefited from the support of the raucous Cologne crowd.
Martin Schindler, tipped at 7-1 by Racing Post Sport's Steve Davies, rattled off five consecutive legs against world number one Van Gerwen having been 5-1 down, while the less experienced Kurz averaged a shade over 95 in a 6-4 victory over Anderson.
Rob Cross didn't have things entirely his own way in his 6-4 opening round win against Max Hopp, another promising German who averaged 106.
Voltage was extremely clinical with his doubles - he was six from six on the outer ring - and it will be difficult for him to reproduce those flawless statistics against Hopp's compatriot Gabriel Clemens.
When Cross was under pressure his finishing came to the rescue and Clemens, who looked in excellent nick when easing past Raymond van Barneveld on Friday, can be given a chance armed with home support.
Draw
(1) P Wright v N Kurz
(4) D Gurney v J Wade
M Schindler v M Suljovic
(3) R Cross v G Clemens
Clemens averaged 98.48 in his 6-3 beating of Barney and the improving German is certainly talented enough to make life tough for Cross. The quarter-finals are first to eight legs, and over 12.5 legs at 4-5 with Coral and Ladbrokes looks the best wager on offer.
Peter Wright, Davies's pre-tournament selection, is performing better each time he comes to the oche and should oust Kurz, but defending champion Mensur Suljovic could be worth opposing against Schindler.
Suljovic was fairly laboured in his opening round win over his former World Cup partner Maik Langendorf. The Austrian averaged 90.86 and couldn't find a maximum, so will need to find his scoring boots to fight off the German youngster.
Schindler's confidence levels would gone through the roof following his come-from-behind win over Van Gerwen and his last three meetings with Suljovic have gone his way, including at the Grand Slam of Darts in November last year.
The final last-eight clash pits Daryl Gurney against Jame Wade but bookmakers are struggling to separate the pair and it is easy to see why.
