European Championship preview

The darts majors are coming thick and fast with this year's Euro stars in Dortmund for the 18th staging of the European Championship.

Thirty-two players will toe the oche on Thursday and Friday in round-one action, players who have earned the right to grace the Westfalenhallen courtesy of their efforts on the European Tour this year.

What that means is that the seedings bear no relation to the world rankings - for example Nathan Aspinall is the top seed, Luke Littler number four, Michael van Gerwen at 19 - and that a number of big guns failed to qualify at all, among them Joe Cullen, freefalling Michael Smith and reigning champion Ritchie Edhouse.

Littler, of course, is the favourite for this event having won the Matchplay and Grand Prix since the summer, plus a pair of World Series events Down Under.

The Nuke is slated to meet Luke Humphries in the quarter-finals with any number of potential hazards waiting from the top quarter in the semis.

The favourite to emerge from that top section is Josh Rock despite recent German Championship winner Aspinall being the top seed.

A resurgent Dirk van Duijvenbode is also fancied, though it's his first-round opponent and compatriot Danny Noppert who gets the nod to reach the semis.

Noppy is a gutsy customer, who beat Gerwyn Price to reach the quarters in last weekend's German Championship having made the semis at the Grand Prix earlier this month.

Gian van Veen, Noppert's World Cup partner, is taken to continue his rise by emerging from the bottom half.

The Giant had a very different Grand Prix to Noppert, bowing out in round one to Littler despite carding the highest average ever recorded at the event.

To show he wasn't scarred by the early exit, he delivered again in Germany last week at the final European Championship qualifying event, battering Jonny Clayton 6-1 and beating Noppert before losing a decider to Aspinall in the semis.

He opens up against misfiring Damon Heta and if he wins that well, the youngster could go on a march to the final.
