Match previews

Don’t shy away from opposing the favourites on night one of the BoyleSports World Grand Prix in Dublin.

The first round of the Grand Prix, over a rapid best-of-two sets, has often proved to be a graveyard for short-priced favourites.

Rob Cross and Michael Smith were the big casualties last year while Michael van Gerwen was famously stunned by John Henderson in round one in 2017, the second time the Green Machine has fallen at the first.

Smith and Van Gerwen are in action on the opening evening at the Citywest and both can be opposed.

Bully Boy faces a real test from Simon Whitlock. Neither man is in sparkling form but Smith just needs to miss a couple of opening doubles and the Aussie isn’t afraid to step in.

Van Gerwen takes on Jamie Hughes, a debutant and power scorer who has the tools to push the Dutchman all the way.
