Day five preview
Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton are long odds-on to tee up a mouthwatering all-Welsh quarter-final at the Grand Slam of Darts, but neither should be taking their last-16 challenge lightly.
Bradley Brooks and Nathan Rafferty, who both qualified via the UK Development Tour Order of Merit, have created a strong impression in Wolverhampton and are certainly two stars for the future.
Rafferty survived six match darts before recording a dramatic 5-4 win over world number 12 Krzysztof Ratajski on Monday, enabling him to finish runner-up behind Price in Group A.
Brooks also belied his tender years to win two of his three group games - which included a 5-1 thumping of Mervyn King - to chase home Clayton in Group B.
This longer best-of-19 format ought to favour the heavy hitters and although an upset may prove beyond the 21-year-old youngsters, the composure they have shown suggests they won’t be disgraced.
The heavy scoring of Brooks has been particularly impressive and the even-money on offer about him hitting at least four maximums makes plenty of appeal.
The PDC world youth champion fired three 180s in a 5-3 defeat to Clayton and also managed three when beating Rusty-Jake Rodriguez. With the potential of 19 legs, Brooks should be backed to rack up at least four maximums against Price.
A rejuvenated Rob Cross should seal a quarter-final spot at the expense of Ryan Joyce, but James Wade may find things tougher against Rowby-John Rodriguez.
The Machine averaged a shade under 112 in Monday’s must-win match with Cross but is inconsistent and a repeat performance would appear unlikely.
Even so, he faces an interesting challenger in Rodriguez, who recorded group-stage wins over Stephen Bunting and Chris Dobey and claims he is finally in the right frame of mind to deliver.
The Austrian averaged 104.82, hit five of six doubles in the 5-1 crushing of Bunting, and can serve it up to Wade.
