Betfred World Matchplay second round preview

After something of a slow start the temperature is set to rise in the Winter Gardens as the second round of the World Matchplay takes place on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rowby-John Rodriguez pulled off the biggest upset of the weekend’s matches as he beat Jonny Clayton 10-7 on Saturday and he goes into his showdown with Dimitri Van den Bergh as an underdog once more.

The Austrian is in the form of his life, narrowly missing out on his first European Tour title earlier in the month when beaten by Luke Humphries in the 8-7 in the final.

Rodriguez has also won the last three head-to-heads against Van den Bergh and looks the value selection to extend his strong debut Matchplay campaign.

Another player who impressed on the opening weekend and is fancied to follow up is Dirk van Duijvenbode.

The Aubergenius recorded the highest average of Saturday and Sunday’s games, 103.61, when winning a back-and-forth battle with Ryan Searle. He faces Michael Smith in his second round clash, who came from 8-4 down to beat Andrew Gilding 11-9 in his opener.

Van Duijvenbode reached the final of the Dutch Masters last month before a resounding success in the final of Players Championship 18, beating Gabriel Clemens 8-0 in his last game before Blackpool.

The Dutchman seems to relish the big stages and occasions and can feed off the crowd to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
