World Matchplay predictions

Gerwyn Price has plunged down to number 11 in the world rankings but the Welshman arrives in Blackpool for the World Matchplay in blistering form and more than capable of landing an eighth individual major title.

The Iceman is third-favourite with all firms behind the world's top two – reigning champion Luke Humphries and world champion Luke Littler.

Their claims are obvious and The Nuke will surely improve on last season's first-round exit on his debut.

But they are far from invincible. Indeed results have been mixed for the pair, whereas 8-1 shot Price heads to the seaside with results to brag about.

Twice this month already he has bolted up in prestigious stage events, winning the Poland Masters and then a week later seeing off Humphries among others to claim the Baltic Sea Open.

Runner-up at Blackpool in 2022 and with crowds far less hostile to him than they ever were, Price can have a serious run in Blackpool and defy his seeding by some margin.

Humphries is 11-8 to win his quarter and that will be a popular bet, although backing James Wade at 9-1 to win the section almost appeals more.

For context, leftie Wade has won his quarter nine times at the Matchplay. Not even Van Gerwen, Barney or Gary Anderson can match that level of consistency.

Wade, who made the last four 12 months ago, simply loves the Blackpool stage and having shown in March by reaching the UK Open final that he can still cut it in the majors, it would be unwise to rule out the 2008 winner from having another week to remember.

Jonny Clayton reached the final in 2023 and has had a mixed year with some real successes on TV, reaching the final of both the Masters and World Cup (with Price) and the semis at the UK Open.

The other Welshman in the field is inconsistent but that also makes the Ferret an attractive each-way proposition at 28-1.

Total tournament 170 checkouts have been set at 3.5 and you have to go back to 2012 for the last time there were more than three in a single Matchplay. You have been warned.
