Tadej Pogacar had a quiet day in the yellow jersey on Sunday but his team held the upper hand again as key lieutenant Tim Wellens took a solo victory on stage 15 to Carcassonne.

Monday’s rest day precedes an exceptionally hard final week in the Alps, with summit finishes on stages 16, 18 and 19, and that gives Pogacar more opportunities to strengthen his iron grip on the race.

Yellow looks assured barring accident or illness, but there is a general feeling that cycling’s new cannibal is intent on gobbling up more of the jerseys. The polka dots look well within reach – he trails leader Lenny Martinez by just eight points in the mountains classification – and so does the green jersey held by Jonathan Milan.

Opportunities have become scarce for Milan, who has added only 24 points in the past week. Pogacar has advanced his score by 67 in that time and now trails by just 28.

Milan was a best-priced 3-10 for green after stage 15 but he could be the most nervous of the jersey favourites in the final week.

If a breakaway limits Milan’s points at the intermediate sprint on Tuesday or the potential sprint finish on Wednesday, Pogacar could be in business.

First place on the summit finishes carries a total of 80 points in the mountains classifications and 60 in the points. As well as being a best-priced 8-15 on Sunday night for the polka dots, Pogacar was a general 5-1 shot for green.
