Dutchman Mike Teunissen is the surprise first leader of the 2019 Tour de France after he claimed victory at treble-figure odds on an incident-packed first stage in Brussels.

The Jumbo-Visma rider beat three-time world champion Peter Sagan, an 11-2 shot, on the line into the Belgian capital after his team leader, the 7-4 stage favourite Dylan Groenewegen, suffered a heavy crash with 1.5km to go.

Groenewegen wasn't the only high-profile rider to hit the deck on a nervy first stage. Defending champion Geraint Thomas was caught up in the same crash as Groenewegen but the defending champion later tweeted that he had suffered no ill effects.

Danish GC contender Jakob Fuglsang required stitches after he was left with cuts to his shoulder and face after crashing with just under 19km to go.

Helped by his Astana teammates, Fuglsang was able to finish without any time losses and a medical check-up revealed no fractures.
