T20 Blast preview
Surrey fell at the final hurdle of last season’s T20 Blast, losing to Nottinghamshire in the title decider, but hopes are high that they can go one better this time around.
Vikram Solanki’s side lit up the South Group last year, easing into the knockout phase with seven victories and only a single loss to Kent, and they are odds-on to begin the new Blast campaign with victory at Middlesex.
Surrey readily accounted for their London rivals twice in the shortest format last season - winning by six wickets and 30 runs - and their strength in depth should ensure they feature at the business end of the competition again.
But injuries to fast bowlers Sean Abbott and Reece Topley, and the absence of England call-up Ollie Pope may leave them more vulnerable than usual.
And that could bolster the scoring hopes of Middlesex opener Stevie Eskinazi, who looks good value to be the hosts’ top batsman.
Eskinazi was the second highest run-scorer in last year’s competition, behind only Kent's Daniel Bell-Drummond with 413 runs, and that was despite his county failing to reach the knockout stages.
The 27-year-old contributed four half-centuries from his ten appearances, which included a brilliant knock of 77 in defeat to Surrey at Lord’s, and he may carry Middlesex's runscoring burden again.
