Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades struggled for consistency throughout the league stage of the Big Bash but the pair produced superb performances in the semi-finals to set up a showdown for the trophy at the Docklands Stadium.

The venue for the final is the Renegades' home ground but the Stars, who have won both Melbourne derbies this season, are slight favourites at 10-11.

They came through a tough semi-final away to Hobart Hurricanes, who finished top of the league, while the Renegades needed an unbeaten 31 off 14 balls from all-rounder Dan Christian to win a thriller against Sydney Sixers.

The Stars have a couple of in-form all-rounders of their own, however, and it may be worth backing either Marcus Stoinis or skipper Glenn Maxwell to be named man of the match in the final.

Stoinis opened the bowling and the batting in the league meeting at Docklands, taking 3-19 before scoring an unbeaten 70 as the Stars reached their victory target of 122.

He followed that performance with 53 and 3-20 against the Strikers and 43 and 4-21 against the Heat, while his four subsequent innings have yielded scores of 49, 81, 34 and 18.

Maxwell has hit peak form at the ideal time, with scores of 61, 82 and 43 not out in his last four appearances. He also showed his value in the field in the final league game against the Sixers, dismissing the dangerous Moises Henriques and taking two catches at slip.

Recommendations
M Stoinis to be man of the match
2pts 6-1 general
G Maxwell to be man of the match
1pt 9-1 Betway
