Match preview

A new pitch should mean new ambitions for England and Australia when they square up for the one-day series decider under the Old Trafford lights.

We haven’t had a 300-plus score in the series yet – between them they couldn’t even make 250 on a jaded track on Sunday – but sights are being set that much higher with a new, pacy strip to go to war on.

Calling the clincher looks seriously tricky with little to choose between these international juggernauts, though the Aussies would look that much stronger if Steve Smith can return from concussion issues to shore up a middle order which melted away in Manchester at the weekend.

Adil Rashid should also enjoy some extra pace and bounce in the wicket, and punters might want to have a look at bet365’s assessment of the Yorkshire leg-spinner. They have quoted his player performance at 31.5 – 20 points per wicket, one per run, ten per catch – and that looks to be on the low side.

Rashid, who averages 1.5 wickets per one-dayer, hasn’t lit up proceedings thus far yet his player performance returns have weighed in at 45 and 55.

He hasn’t been wicketless in any of his six one-dayers played in 2020 and his performance has never dropped below 35 in seven 50-over showings for England at Old Trafford.

Another price to chew over is the 11-2 that Jos Buttler is England’s top scorer. Quiet so far, he’ll get a chance to shine batting at five and would fancy a major contribution on a surface which suits.
