The first women’s Olympic golf tournament for 116 years tees off today in Rio and it will be somewhat different from the low-key nine-hole event won by Margaret Abbott in Paris in 1900.

For the record, old Marge took 47 shots and was the first American woman to win a gold medal.

Instead of that field of ten, there’ll be 60, just like the men’s competition, with the women playing an abbreviated version of the Reserva de Marapendi course, almost 900 yards shorter than the one where Eurostars Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson duelled head-to-head on Sunday.
