Having started the Cricket World Cup as 2-1 favourites to lift the trophy England were last night pushed out to 7-2 after suffering a third group-stage defeat to Australia.

The Three Lions had started the day as 4-6 shots to overcome the Aussies at Lord’s and looked in good shape after restricting their opponents to 285-7.

But a batting collapse started with opener James Vince being dismissed with the second ball and England fell 64 runs short.

The hosts had already been replaced by India as favourites following defeats to Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and Australia’s latest success saw them move up to second-favourites.

England remain odds-on to reach the semi-finals but are 8-15 from 1-6 and face tough fixtures against India and New Zealand before then.

Cricket World Cup: 2 India (general), 21-10 Australia (bet365), 7-2 England (Sky Bet), 6 New Zealand (bet365, Coral, Ladbrokes), 25 bar.
