Bangladesh recorded their highest one-day international total of 330 to win a thrilling contest against South Africa in their opening game of the World Cup.

The Tigers had been a best-priced 3-1 to inflict a second successive tournament defeat on the Proteas, who lost the competition's curtain-raiser by 104 runs to England on Thursday.

Faf du Plessis's men have drifted to 3-1 to reach the semi-finals and are 25-1 to lift the trophy following their 21-run defeat, while Bangladesh can be backed at 7-2 for a top-four berth.

Mushfiqur Rahim (78) and Shakib Al Hasan (75) set the tone by scoring 142 runs for the third wicket, recording Bangladesh's highest World Cup partnership.

Late contributions from Mohammad Mithun (21), Mosaddek Hossain (26) and Mahmudullah, who scored an unbeaten 46, helped them to the record-breaking total but Bangladesh remained 11-10 outsiders at the break.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock failed to add a substantial total to his knock of 68 against England, scoring 23 before being run out by Rahim.

Captain du Plessis managed 62 after Aiden Markram put on 45 but South Africa fell further behind the required run-rate and finished on 309-8.

They will be India's first opponents in the World Cup on Wednesday and know that defeat could cast serious doubts over their chances of making the knockout phase.

Bangladesh will lock horns with New Zealand, who beat Sri Lanka in their opener, the same day.
