Women's Cricket World Cup preview

Last year's Women's T20 World Cup produced unexpected finalists as New Zealand beat South Africa but normal service should be resumed in the 50-over World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

Australia are worthy odds-on favourites to win their eighth World Cup in 13 attempts and India and England are rated the only serious challengers.

England won their warm-up games against India and Australia but they were walloped 16-0 by the Aussies in last winter's multi-format Ashes series.

Australia sharpened themselves up for this tournament by beating India 2-1 in this month's ODI series and their batters piled up a huge total of 412 in the decider in Delhi.

With flat pitches expected, the Aussies' depth of batting talent gives them a massive advantage. Captain Alyssa Healy scored 170 in their 2022 World Cup final win over England yet she is only fourth-favourite with bet365 to be Australia's top tournament runscorer.

All-rounders Ash Gardner, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham and Tahlia McGrath are potential matchwinners with bat and ball while Ellyse Perry and Megan Schutt are survivors from the 2013 team who lifted the World Cup in India.

Lamb ready to feast on opposition spinners

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt made an unbeaten 148 in a losing cause in the 2022 World Cup final and retired on 120 in last week's warm-up win over India.

However, it could be worth chancing Emma Lamb at a big price to top-score for England after a prolific domestic summer in white-ball cricket.

Lamb is a fine player of spin and her warm-up knocks of 84 against India and 60 against Australia should have sealed her spot in the middle-order.

India seamer Kranti Goud has played only seven ODIs but she averages two wickets per match and is a tempting each-way bet in the top tournament bowler market.

Goud took 6-52 in July's win over England in Chester-le-Street, where Lamb scored a classy 68, and picked up three wickets in five overs in the warm-up game against Sciver-Brunt's side.

The 22-year-old dismissed Australia captain Healy in all three one-dayers this month and she could play a starring role for the hosts.
