Wednesday's Big Bash League preview

The final fixtures of the league stage of the Big Bash take place on Wednesday as Hobart Hurricanes host Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder travel to Melbourne Stars.

Monday's defeat to the Steve Smith-inspired Sydney Sixers was a major blow to the Hurricanes' hopes of sneaking into the playoffs while the Stars are adrift at the bottom of the table, having suffered ten defeats in 13 matches.

They are 11-8 to sign off with a win over the Thunder in a repeat of the opening fixture of the 2022-23 season, a low-scoring thriller which the Sydney side won by one wicket thanks to a scampered bye off the final ball of the 20th over.

Australia all-rounder Marcus Stoinis made a first-ball duck for the Stars that day but he is finishing the campaign strongly, scoring 36 not out, 54, six and 74 in his last four innings, and he looks worth backing to top-score for the woebegone hosts.
