Quarter-final preview

England’s white-ball series with India, which gets underway in Southampton on Thursday, has come at the worst possible time for T20 Blast quarter-finalists Surrey and Yorkshire.

Surrey, who topped the South Group with ten wins from 14 games to secure a home quarter-final, are without their captain Chris Jordan as well as Sam Curran, Jason Roy and Reece Topley for the visit of the Vikings.

Yorkshire, who were more fortunate to reach the knockout stages after they profited from Leicestershire being docked points, are also severely weakened due to international call-ups with skipper David Willey and destructive batsmen Harry Brook and Dawid Malan all on England duty.

And with Test stars Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root unlikely to feature after helping England beat India at Edgbaston on Tuesday, there will be plenty of heavy hitters missing at The Oval.

Surrey are unbeaten in all competitions at home this season and if they are going to maintain their formidable record in south London then another big innings may be required from Will Jacks.

Only Northamptonshire’s Chris Lynn and Somerset’s Rilee Rossouw have passed 50 on more occasions in this year’s Blast than Jacks, who has made five half centuries and amassed 448 runs in 14 T20 appearances.

The 23-year-old looks vital to Surrey’s chances and at 13-5 he is the leading candidate to lead their charge with the bat.
