South Africa v England team news

South Africa
Veteran Dale Steyn made his first international appearance in almost a year in East London and should retain his place.

England
Dawid Malan, who starred in November's series win in New Zealand, is pushing for a recall, possibly at the expense of Joe Denly.

South Africa v England second Twenty20 international preview

South Africa's cricketers have a reputation for coming up short in close finishes but they ended up on the winning side in a thrilling first Twenty20 international against England.

Punchy half-centuries from Jason Roy and Eoin Morgan left England needing just five runs from five balls with four wickets in hand in East London but fast bowler Lungi Ngidi managed to seal a one-run win for the Proteas.

The three-match series moves to Durban, the venue where India's Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes off a Stuart Broad over in the 2007 World Twenty20.

More big-hitting displays look likely on a pleasant evening at Kingsmead and England's batsmen have a point to prove after messing up the run-chase in the first T20.

They lost the sixes battle 5-4 at Buffalo Park but are a tempting price to clear the ropes more often than their hosts in the second game.

A top four of Roy, Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Morgan should be among the strongest on show at this autumn's Twenty20 World Cup in Australia while Ben Stokes hit eight sixes in the Test series victory over South Africa.

England struck 46 maximums in November's five-match Twenty20 series in New Zealand, taking advantage of some short boundaries, and they could be too powerful for the Proteas in terms of six-hitting in Durban.

David Miller's performance made up at 46 in the first game thanks to 16 runs and three catches and his line looks too low at 24.5 at a venue where he scored a match-winning 53 not out against Australia in 2016.

Miller made an unbeaten 69 in his only innings of the one-day series against England and his fielding prowess makes him an attractive punt in bet365's market, which awards ten points per catch taken.

He is always in the game, patrolling the long-on and midwicket boundaries late in the innings, and there was no fluke about his trio of catches in East London. Since the start of 2019 he has pouched 14 chances (one as a stand-in wicketkeeper) in just nine T20 internationals including four against Pakistan in Cape Town and three against Sri Lanka in Johannesburg.

South Africa v England venue

The Proteas have won their last three T20 games at Kingsmead although the venue hasn't hosted a 20-over international since March 2016 and last week's ODI there was rained off after 11.2 overs.

Yuvraj's blitz helped India and England amass 418 runs in their 2007 clash but no team has reached 200 in the eight subsequent matches.

South Africa v England weather

A warm, cloudy evening is forecast with temperatures around 24C.
