England
Tom Banton and Matt Parkinson should get another chance after making their debuts in Cape Town.

Match preview

England's first one-day international since being crowned world champions did not go according to plan as South Africa's new captain Quinton de Kock steered his side to a comfortable seven-wicket victory in Cape Town.

Bookmakers expect England to bounce back by winning the second ODI in Durban to set up a series decider in Johannesburg on Sunday. However, the forecast is for storms and heavy rain so an abbreviated game looks likely.

England needed Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler to bail out their top order in last year's World Cup final against New Zealand and it was a similar story in Cape Town as Joe Denly (87) and Chris Woakes (40) hauled them from 131-6 to 258-8.

A huge second-wicket stand between De Kock (107) and Temba Bavuma (98) eased any South African nerves in the run-chase and England's bowlers can expect another difficult day in Durban.

With Jofra Archer set to miss the Sri Lanka tour and the Indian Premier League through injury, there are opportunities for England's other quick bowlers to impress but the Curran brothers went wicketless in the first ODI and it took the off-spin of Joe Root to finally get rid of De Kock.

The one-day pitches at Kingsmead have yielded a bumper crop of runs in recent years and given a better weather forecast the 8-11 about a century being scored in the match would be well worth a bet.

The last five ODIs at the Durban venue have produced eight individual centuries and in the only one of those games not to feature a ton Rassie van der Dussen finished unbeaten on 80 as South Africa chased down 207 to beat Pakistan.

In 2016, David Miller's century trumped those of David Warner and Steve Smith as the Proteas nailed a target of 372 against Australia and England's batsmen will be aiming to deliver a more ruthless display second time around.

Their top six all got starts in the first ODI but only Denly was able to kick on as South Africa's bowlers mixed up their pace well on a sluggish pitch.

Number three Root could consider himself unfortunate as he was run out by a spectacular direct hit from Van der Dussen.

England's Test captain was just warming to his task, reaching 17 off 21 balls without a boundary, and he had a magnificent one-day series in South Africa in 2016, scoring 52, 38, 125, 109 and 27.

Given the gloomy weather outlook, though, it may pay to side with a couple of opening batsmen who could star in a shortened contest.

De Kock made a dream start to his career as captain, opener and wicketkeeper for South Africa with a punchy century in the first ODI and he loves batting at Kingsmead.

The left-hander struck a sweet 121 off 108 balls against Sri Lanka last year while his other four ODI innings at the venue included a century against India and 70 from just 49 deliveries against Australia.

England's Jason Roy blazed five fours in his 32 in the first ODI, having made 104 in a total of 240 in the first warm-up game in Paarl, and he is also of interest in the man-of-the-match market.

Roy lost his place in the side at the 2017 Champions Trophy but since his recall he averages 52.72 with six hundreds and nine fifties in 37 innings.

Venue

Kingsmead has produced some high-scoring ODIs in recent years, most notably when South Africa chased 372 to beat Australia in 2016. The Proteas have won seven of their last eight in Durban, where the teams batting first have won 22 of 41 completed games.

Weather

Thundery showers are expected to hit Durban in the morning and there could be frequent interruptions to play throughout the day, 26C.
