Match preview

Pakistan are in pole position to claim one of the two semi-final berths on offer in Group Two having seen off group powerhouses India and New Zealand in their first two outings.

Overcoming tournament favourites India was a huge moment for Pakistan, who had lost every meeting with their fierce rivals at a World Cup - 20 or 50 overs - prior to Sunday's win in Dubai.

And the manner in which they ended India's stranglehold over them in major one-day tournaments was even more impressive - Pakistan didn't just beat India, they hammered them by ten wickets.

They took that confidence into Tuesday's win over New Zealand in Sharjah, chasing down their target with eight balls to spare.

Two wins from their final three matches against the Afghans and first-round qualifiers Namibia and Scotland should suffice so defeat on Friday wouldn't be disastrous, although captain Babar Azam will be keen to maintain the impetus they have built up in the last few days.

Azam has helped set the tone at the top of the order but opening partner Mohammad Rizwan has top-scored in both of Pakistan's games to date.

The wicketkeeper averages over 50 in T20 internationals and could continue his rich vein of form by taking centre stage again.
