Pakistan vs New Zealand prediction
New Zealand have made a habit of punching above their weight at global tournaments down the years.
In the last two decades the Black Caps have twice been World Cup runners-up, made the semi-finals of the other three editions and reached the World T20 decider in 2021.
Indeed, the only occasions they have failed to reach the last four of a major ICC tournament in that time were in last summer's T20 World Cup, where they failed to get out of their group, and the last two stagings of the Champions Trophy in 2013 and 2017.
The Kiwis will be targeting another bold showing at this year's Champions Trophy and a victory over hosts Pakistan in the tournament opener would go a long way to helping them reach the final four.
The signs are certainly promising. Since arriving in Pakistan, New Zealand have beaten South Africa and the hosts twice in a pre-Champions Trophy tri-series tournament and Afghanistan in a warm-up encounter.
All of their tri-series victories were relatively comfortable, too, with a six-wicket win over the well-touted Proteas sandwiched between 78-run and five-wicket successes over Pakistan.
The latter of those triumphs came in Karachi, venue for Wednesday's opening match, and there seems little reason why the Black Caps should be considered outsiders to get their campaign up and running at the first time of asking.
Kiwis all-rounder Glenn Phillips has been in particularly good nick over the last couple of weeks, hitting 106 not out and a quickfire unbeaten 20 in two meetings with Pakistan, 28 not out against South Africa and a brisk 46 before retiring out against Afghanistan.
A small interest on the 28-year-old being named man of the match at the National Bank Cricket Arena is advised as he could also have a role to play with his part-time off-spin.
