New Zealand vs England second ODI preview
Australia have confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will miss the first Ashes Test in Perth due to a back injury but they can take some solace from England's batting display in the first ODI against New Zealand.
Jamie Smith was bowled for a first-ball duck by Matt Henry before fellow Test players Ben Duckett, Joe Root and Jacob Bethell were all dismissed for two in Mount Maunganui on Sunday.
It took a sensational innings of 135 off 101 balls from white-ball captain Harry Brook to drag England to a total of 223 and, despite a sharp opening spell from Brydon Carse, New Zealand chased down their target with four wickets and 80 balls to spare.
Carse is likely to share the new ball with Jofra Archer in Wednesday's second ODI in Hamilton, where England are slight favourites to win and set up a series decider in Wellington.
However, New Zealand have a formidable record at Seddon Park, where they have won 13 of their last 14 one-dayers, and overcast conditions should help the quick bowlers again.
England's hopes of a morale boost before the Ashes may again be dented by home pacemen Matt Henry and Zakary Foulkes and the tourists look set to fall short of an opening partnership of under 26.5.
All-format players Smith and Duckett were rested for the 1-0 T20 series victory over the Black Caps after a gruelling home summer of cricket.
Both were dismissed by sharp deliveries in the first ODI and in New Zealand's last three matches in Hamilton they reduced Pakistan to 32-5 and Sri Lanka to 18-3 and 22-4.
Fast bowler Foulkes could overshadow Archer's return
Archer's return to action is a thrill for England fans. He took 4-62 and 4-18 against South Africa in his last two ODI appearances in September and sealed a Super Over triumph against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's.
England were bowled out for 131 in the first ODI against South Africa last month but rallied to score 414-5 in the third game, with Root and Bethell making centuries.
They were two of Foulkes's four victims in Mount Maunganui, both bowled in spectacular fashion, and he also had Duckett and Sam Curran caught behind.
The young all-rounder is an exciting talent, claiming match figures of 9-75 on his Test debut in Zimbabwe in August, and he looks overpriced to be the Kiwis' top bowler again.
