Match preview
England captain Eoin Morgan described their third Twenty20 with New Zealand as “one that got away” and their collapse could come back to haunt them as the Black Caps aim to seal a series victory in Napier.
The one-day-international World Cup winners required only 44 runs from the final 34 deliveries with eight wickets in hand to take a 2-1 lead in their five-match T20 battle with New Zealand.
But the middle order disintegrated and England lost five wickets in 19 balls, allowing the Kiwis to go ahead and the hosts are as short as 1-7 to win the series.
It is easy to point to inexperience as the reason for England buckling but debutant Tom Banton posted a solid 18 runs at the top of the order and should retain his spot for the fourth match.
New Zealand are getting stronger with the bat, scoring 153, 176 and 180 in the three games and the return of star bowler Trent Boult, who is yet to play in the series, should tilt the game in their favour.
Boult took a modest five wickets in five matches during a disrupted Indian Premier League campaign but he was prolific in the World Cup with 17 scalps. He will be looking to make amends for failing to take a wicket when these sides met in the final.
In the absence of super skipper Kane Williamson, New Zealand are looking to their big hitters to get them over the line and Colin de Grandhomme could be a solid bet to top-score for his side.
The number four scored 19 and 28 in the first two T20s before a 35-ball 55 earned him the man-of-the-match award last time out.
New Zealand’s openers Martin Guptill and Colin Munro continue to underperform at the crease - they managed only two half-centuries between them at the World Cup - and it is always worth looking lower down the order in the runscoring markets.
England have been the architects of their own downfall in this series, with their sloppy fielding enabling the hosts to level the series in the second T20 before their monumental collapse in the third, and Morgan may struggle to lift spirits after a quick turnaround.
