Ireland vs England first T20 preview 

History will be made on Wednesday when 21-year-old Jacob Bethell becomes the youngest man to captain England in a competitive fixture.

Bethell, deputising for Harry Brook in the three-match T20 series against Ireland, is 1-12 to make a winning start at The Village in Malahide.

Ireland have never lost at T20 international against their neighbours although, admittedly, the sample size is tiny. 

A washout in May 2010 was followed by a five-run win for the Irish in a rain-affected T20 World Cup game at the MCG in October 2022.

Bad weather forced the abandonment of England's series decider against South Africa on Sunday following a deluge of runs for Phil Salt and Jos Buttler in Friday's win at Old Trafford.

Buttler smashed 83 off 30 balls and Salt finished unbeaten on 141 as England racked up an astonishing total of 304-2.

The openers dominate England's top-runscorer market against a depleted Ireland bowling attack but Essex's Jordan Cox is an eye-catching price to star for the visitors.

Injuries have limited Cox's international opportunities but he was sensational in The Hundred, topping the batting chart with 367 runs from 211 balls for champions Oval Invincibles.

His 139 not out off 60 balls for Essex against Hampshire was the highest score in this season's T20 Blast and he can seize his chance to impress England's selectors.

Campher in cracking form for clash with England

Ireland's Curtis Campher played three One-Day Cup matches for Essex last month, marking his first appearance with a blistering innings of 123 not out off 68 deliveries against Surrey.

He looks overpriced to top-score for the hosts, having made a classy 49 in last year's T20 defeat to South Africa in Abu Dhabi.

Campher's last two 20-over knocks were 57 off 35 and 44 off 24 for Munster Reds and he is a dangerous hitter in the Ireland middle-order.
