Mumbai Indians vs Kolkata Knight Riders prediction
No team in IPL history have won more titles than Mumbai Indians' five but Hardik Pandya's men have lost their swagger in the past couple of years.
Mumbai finished bottom of the table in 2024 and this season's defeats to Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans mean they have lost 12 of their last 16 IPL fixtures.
The Indians look vulnerable favourites to beat defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders, who did the double over them in last season's league stage.
KKR's title defence began with a chastening home defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru but they bounced back with an impressive eight-wicket win over Rajasthan Royals.
That victory was achieved despite the absence of Sunil Narine, last season's MVP, but the influential all-rounder has recovered from illness and should be back in the team at the Wankhede Stadium.
Narine and Quinton de Kock, who smashed an unbeaten 97 against Rajasthan, form an exciting partnership at the top of the order and new captain Ajinkya Rahane cracked 56 off 31 balls in the opening defeat to RCB.
However, number four Venkatesh Iyer is the most eye-catching price to top-score for Kolkata given his sensational record against Mumbai.
Venkatesh was bowled for six by RCB spinner Krunal Pandya in KKR's first game of the season and did not get a chance to bat in the rout of Rajasthan.
He is capable of coming to the party at the Wankhede, where he made a matchwinning 70 last season before top-scoring again with 42 from 21 deliveries in the return fixture at Eden Gardens.
Venkatesh achieved the rare feat of being named player of the match in a losing cause in Mumbai in April 2023, when he scored 104 off 51, and he can enhance his terrific record of 362 runs in six appearances against the Indians.
Mumbai's batting unit has failed to fire in their first two matches. They were restricted to 155-9 in Chennai, where Tilak Varma's 31 was the highest score of the innings, and crawled to 160-6 when chasing 197 against Gujarat on Saturday.
Skipper Hardik Pandya, one of Mumbai's most dangerous hitters, made a painful 11 off 17 balls against his former team and Suryakumar Yadav is one of the few in-form batters in the side.
He hit four sixes in a sparkling 28-ball 48 in Ahmedabad and his last two innings against KKR at the Wankhede were 43 off 25 and 56 off 35.
Only veteran Rohit has scored more T20 runs at the Mumbai venue than Suryakumar, who is worth backing to hit the most sixes for his struggling side.
