India Women vs South Africa preview

The Women’s Cricket World Cup semi-finals threw up two major shocks with Australia and England, who were both heavy favourites, crashing out against India and South Africa respectively.

That means that there will be a new name on the trophy with hosts India a short price to win this competition for the first time after springing a big upset to knockout antepost favourites and seven-time winners Australia.

The Proteas should not be underestimated, however, as they were impressive in their semi-final win over England and they were also three-wicket winners over these opponents in the group stage.

Crucial to South Africa’s chances is Laura Wolvaardt, who has comfortably the most runs of anyone in the tournament.

The 26-year-old has 470 runs in eight innings at an average of 67.14 and on a wicket which looks likely to be batter-friendly, she could make hay once more.

The opener has scores of 169, 90, 60 not out and 31 from her last four innings and chipped in with a crucial 70 when her side beat these opponents recently.

Wolvaardt is only 40 runs away from becoming the leading scorer at any edition of this tournament and her match runs line of 31.5 looks generous.
