India vs England prediction
England's bowlers took plenty of punishment during their 4-1 Twenty20 series defeat to India, whose senior batsmen have a point to prove in the first ODI.
Captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant return to action as both teams aim to sharpen up their 50-over skills for this month's Champions Trophy.
Kohli was among the players sent back to domestic cricket after India's disappointing Test tour of Australia and he was bowled for six on his first Ranji Trophy appearance for Delhi in 12 years.
However, he is worth backing bet to top-score in the first ODI as he was comfortably the leading batsman at the 2023 World Cup, piling up 765 runs in 11 innings.
Kohli's last three ODI visits to Nagpur, where the three-match series begins, produced scores of 115 not out, 39 and 116 – all against Australia – and he may get back into the groove against England's bowlers.
Gill endured a chastening Test series in Australia, scoring 31, 28, one, 20 and 13 in five innings, and he made 16, 35 and six in his most recent ODI series against Sri Lanka.
England looked threatening with the new ball in the T20s so backing opener Gill to score under 4.5 fours is an appealing bet.
It would have been a winner in seven of his last nine ODIs, dating back to the 2023 World Cup clash with England in which he was dismissed for nine.
Jos Buttler's men suffered an ignominious early exit at that tournament and they are 9-5 to win the first ODI and 6-1 to triumph at the Champions Trophy, which takes place in Pakistan and the UAE.
