India vs Australia prediction

Australia stunned India in Ahmedabad to win the 2023 World Cup and they are targeting a similar upset in the first Champions Trophy semi-final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Circumstances clearly favour India, who played – and won – all three of their Group A matches in Dubai while the Aussies, missing World Cup-winning captain Pat Cummins due to injury, have had a stop-start campaign in Pakistan.

They dug deep to claim a five-wicket victory over struggling England before their fixture against South Africa was washed out.

Rain also forced an early end to the game against Afghanistan when Australia reached 109-1 just 12.5 overs into their chase of 274.

India have a settled gameplan on the slow pitches in Dubai, where they have bowled out Bangladesh for 228, Pakistan for 241 and in-form New Zealand for 205 in their three group wins.

Fast bowler Mohammed Shami has the worst economy rate of the seven bowlers used by India – a highly respectable 5.04 runs per over – so it will be interesting to see how Australia's batters attempt to unsettle their opponents.

An injury to opener Matthew Short may mean a promotion for Josh Inglis, whose brilliant 120 not out off 86 balls saw Australia home against England.

Inglis struck six of his side's nine sixes that day and looks a big price to hit the most maximums in the match, especially as India have hit only 12 sixes in three group games.

Marnus Labuschagne's measured unbeaten 58 helped seal victory in the 2023 World Cup final and he could play an important role at number four.

Labuschagne is an accumulator of runs rather than a destroyer of bowling attacks so conditions in Dubai could suit the 30-year-old, who earned 97 performance points against England thanks to two wickets – one of them caught and bowled – and a classy 47 off 45 deliveries.
