India vs England second ODI predictions

After a 4-1 defeat to India in the Twenty20 series, England were outplayed in the first ODI in Nagpur despite starting both innings strongly.

The tourists were bowled out for 248, having failed to capitalise on a rollicking first-wicket stand of 75 between Phil Salt and Ben Duckett.

Pacemen Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood reduced India to 19-2 but the hosts recovered to reach their victory target with more than 11 overs to spare.

Virat Kohli will be assessed after suffering a knee injury on the eve of the first ODI, but a rejigged middle-order of Shubman Gill (87), Shreyas Iyer (59 off 36 balls) and Axar Patel (52) helped India take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

England are hoping to avoid a sixth defeat in seven games under new white-ball coach Brendon McCullum and opener Duckett has an important role to play in Cuttack.

He hit six boundaries in his 32 in Nagpur, where he was dismissed four balls after a breakdown in communication resulted in the run-out of partner Salt.

Duckett scored 51 and 39 in the third and fourth T20 internationals and he impressed in his first series as ODI opener, making 95, 32, eight, 63 and 107 against Australia last September.

India spinner Varun Chakravarthy was player of the series in the T20s while left-armer Ravindra Jadeja starred with 3-26 in the first ODI.

If England are to set up a series decider then they may well need a match-winning contribution from ace leg-spinner Adil Rashid, who looks overpriced to be named player of the match.

Rashid bowled some beautiful four-over spells in the T20 series, taking 1-14 in Chennai and 1-15 in Rajkot, and he dismissed Axar and KL Rahul in the first ODI.
