England vs West Indies third ODI prediction
Where would England be without Joe Root?
It's a question many members of the Barmy Army and media have asked for more than 12 years now – and Sunday was another example of Root's enduring excellence.
Floundering at 2-2 in their pursuit of the West Indies' 308 all out, Root restored calm to England's innings before going through the gears to guide his side home with a masterful unbeaten 166 and seal a series success at Sophia Gardens.
England's new white-ball skipper Harry Brook believes Root "is only getting better with age", a frightening prospect for bowling attacks but a real boost for the new man in charge.
Root's steady hand at number three will be invaluable for Brook's one-day reboot and should allow the 26-year-old batter to continue to play with freedom.
The captaincy has weighed heavily on many English cricketers down the years but Brook appears to be thriving on his new responsibilities.
England's series against West Indies
| Date | Format | Result | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|
| May 29 | ODI | England won by 238 runs | Edgbaston |
| June 1 | ODI | England won by seven wickets | Sophia Gardens |
| June 3 | ODI | TBC | The Oval |
| June 6 | T20I | TBC | Chester-le-Street |
| June 8 | T20I | TBC | Bristol |
| June 10 | T20I | TBC | Southampton |
A half-century and five catches in his first match as permanent skipper at Edgbaston on Thursday was followed by a typically brisk 47 in Cardiff as he counter-attacked following the early loss of openers Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett.
This series has not been Brook's first taste of international captaincy, though. As stand-in for then-skipper Jos Buttler last September, he hit 39, 4, 110 not out, 87 and 72 in five ODIs against Australia and he may have a similar impact on Tuesday's series finale at The Oval.
It may not take Brook many deliveries to pass a runs line of 29.5 if he gets going and, at 10-1, he looks a huge price to be awarded man-of-the-match honours in south London.
The West Indies' batting unit has blown hot and cold for much of their tour of England and Ireland but captain Shai Hope has at least been a fairly consistent source of runs.
Since being dismissed for two in the Windies' first match of the tour in Dublin, Hope has weighed in with contributions of 49 and 75 against Ireland and 25 and 78 in this series.
Hope relishes English conditions – he scored his only Test match hundreds in the same match at Headingley eight years ago and four of his 16 ODI fifties away from the Caribbean have come in England – and he is easily the most reliable option for a runscorer bet in the tourists' ranks.
