England vs West Indies first T20 prediction
The London traffic aside, Harry Brook hasn't been faced with too many roadblocks as England's limited-overs captain yet.
Brook and his side were forced to travel by a mixture of underground and electric Lime bikes to get to The Oval for Tuesday's ODI series finale, but their emergency travel plans were not in vain as England completed a 3-0 clean sweep over the West Indies.
It was one-way traffic for most of the evening in south London, where the hosts chased down their revised target with seven wickets and more than ten overs to spare.
Openers Jamie Smith (64 from 28 balls) and Ben Duckett (58 from 46), two players who look certain to play a big role in Brook's white-ball revolution, got the ball rolling in the capital, but the performances of some of the old guard will have been just as pleasing for Brook.
Joe Root had a fabulous series, compiling a majestic match-winning 166 in Cardiff on Sunday, and while he is not part of the T20 squad, the man Brook replaced at the helm, Jos Buttler, is.
It will not have gone unnoticed by Buttler just how well Root has played since giving up the Test captaincy a couple of years ago, and the 34-year-old will hope that doing the same will allow him to play with the freedom he thrives.
That was certainly the case at The Oval, where Buttler bludgeoned an unbeaten 41 from only 20 deliveries and sealed the deal with a huge six over midwicket.
Buttler batted at number five in the three ODIs – scoring 37 and nought before his rapid knock on Tuesday – but he will almost certainly take his place in the top three for the T20s.
He could even open given Phil Salt, fresh from helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru win a maiden IPL title three days ago, is set to miss the series on paternity leave.
Buttler himself enjoyed another productive IPL campaign, scoring 538 runs in 13 innings for the Gujarat Titans, and while young guns Brook and Jacob Bethell are undoubtedly the future for England, the man who led them to T20 World Cup glory in 2022 is certainly not going anywhere just yet.
England vs West Indies first T20 team news
England
Phil Salt had been expected to link up with the T20 squad after helping Royal Challengers Bengaluru win a first IPL title on Tuesday but will now miss the series on paternity leave. All-rounders Rehan Ahmed and Liam Dawson are in contention to feature after missing out on selection for the ODIs.
West Indies
In a timely boost for the tourists, Jason Holder and Andre Russell have been recalled for the three-match series. However, Nicolas Pooran has opted against playing after his involvement for the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.
