England's three-match T20 series against South Africa got off to a stuttering start as the hosts stumbled to a 14-run defeat on the DLS method in Cardiff on Wednesday.
It was an unsatisfactory contest, with England set a victory target of 69 in just five overs, and their captain Harry Brook described the game as "a bit of a shambles".
Brook and his teammates are hoping for better weather and a more fulfilling battle at Old Trafford, where South Africa are targeting a fifth straight T20 win over England.
The Proteas, last year's T20 World Cup runners-up, lost key spinner Keshav Maharaj to an injury in the warm-up on Wednesday and they may have to face England paceman Jofra Archer in Manchester.
Archer, who took eight wickets in the last two ODIs against South Africa, was not risked at Sophia Gardens due to the damp underfoot conditions.
With the first Ashes Test just over two months away, England are understandably protective of their star fast bowler's fitness.

Kagiso Rabada, South Africa's main man with the ball, struck with his first delivery of the tour to dismiss England opener Phil Salt in Cardiff, although Jos Buttler's 11-ball 25 gave the hosts some hope.
Buttler knows Old Trafford well, having played for Manchester Originals in The Hundred, and he comes into this game in terrific touch. He scored 61 off 51 balls and 62 not out off 32 in the last two ODIs and also starred in June's T20 series against the West Indies.
Free from the burden of captaincy, Buttler scored 96, 47 and 22 in three innings against the Windies and is worth a bet to be the highest runscorer in the second T20.
South Africa's white-ball middle-order is shaping up nicely with Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs joined by the impressive Donovan Ferreira.
A key member of the Oval Invincibles side who won The Hundred in 2024 and 2025, Ferreira hit 28 sixes over those two seasons at an astonishing rate of one every 5.25 balls.
He was named player of the match on Wednesday after an unbeaten 25, featuring three maximums, and is a great price to hit the most sixes for the Proteas at Old Trafford.
