The first Test between England and India at Headingley lived up to the hype as the hosts, who were 11-4 shots at the start of the fourth innings, chased down 371 to go 1-0 up in the five-match series.

India became the first team in Test history to lose a match in which they had scored five centuries and star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is a doubt for the second game at Edgbaston.

Bumrah's injury history means he is likely to be rested for at least two Tests in this series, so India must decide whether to risk leaving him out and boosting England's chances of taking a 2-0 lead.

His importance to India is colossal. He took 5-83 in the first innings at Headingley while his fellow bowlers had combined figures of 5-356, although a dry pitch at Edgbaston may encourage India to play two spinners.

England's 11 is unchanged and captain Ben Stokes is an eye-catching price to be their top first-innings wicket-taker.

Fitness problems have hampered Stokes's bowling in recent years but, after having hamstring surgery in January, he looks in great rhythm with the ball.

He bowled only 3.2 overs in Zimbabwe's first innings at Trent Bridge in May but produced a couple of brilliant deliveries to get rid of Sikandar Raza and Wessly Madhevere.

Stokes proved his fitness at Headingley, sending down 35 menacing overs in the match and taking 4-66 in the first innings, and he enjoys bowling at Edgbaston.

He claimed six wickets against India at the Birmingham venue in 2018 and another five when England chased 378 to beat them at Edgbaston in 2022.

India number three Sai Sudharsan was dismissed twice by Stokes in Leeds, where his first Test innings ended in a four-ball duck.

But Sudharsan got going in the second innings, scoring 30 off 48 balls, and he looks overpriced to top-score for the tourists.

He was the leading batsman in this year's IPL, scoring 759 runs for Gujarat Titans, and his solid first-class record includes a County Championship century against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge during his brief spell at Surrey last summer.
