Match preview

Jos Buttler's career as England's white-ball captain started in underwhelming fashion with a first-ball duck in a comprehensive 50-run defeat to India in Thursday's first Twenty20 international at the Rose Bowl.

Buttler will hope to make more of an impact in the second game of the series at Edgbaston but India, buoyed by the return of rested stars Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer and Ravindra Jadeja, look poised to wrap up a series win in Birmingham.

Indian Premier League-winning captain Hardik Pandya led the way for India in Southampton, scoring a quickfire 51 before picking up four cheap wickets, but it was a real team effort from the tourists.

Skipper Rohit Sharma set the tone with five boundaries in his 14-ball 24 and there were lively knocks from the rejuvenated Deepak Hooda (33 off 17) and Suryakumar Yadav (39 off 19).

England's pursuit of a target of 199 never got going thanks to some outstanding new-ball bowling from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who dismissed Buttler, and debutant Arshdeep Singh as opener Jason Roy made a tortuous four off 16 deliveries.

England have match-winners in their ranks, even without the rested Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes, and there will not be many days when Buttler and Liam Livingstone are both out for ducks.

However, India's bowlers were terrific on Thursday, backed up by some typically aggressive captaincy from Rohit, and they could be even more threatening if Bumrah and Jadeja return to the 11.

The battle for squad places for this year's T20 World Cup adds some zest to this bilateral series and Mumbai Indians star Yadav has made a strong case to be in India's first-choice 20-over batting unit.

He looked in dazzling touch in his 39 at the Rose Bowl, an innings that included four fours and two sixes, and he has scored 405 runs in 15 T20 international innings at a top-class strike-rate of 171 per 100 balls.

His first two knocks were against England in Ahmedabad in March 2021 – 57 off 31 deliveries and 32 off 17 – and the number four can eclipse a runs line of 20.5 at Edgbaston, which has hosted some high-scoring contests in the T20 Blast this summer.
