Australia vs England prediction

England begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Australia on Saturday morning but they look set for another defeat against their rivals.

Brendon McCullum has taken over from Matthew Mott as head coach of the white-ball team but has failed to turn around the fortunes of his side.

They were outclassed in India on their latest tour, losing seven of the eight games across T20 and 50-over formats.

Their bowling attack got very little out of the sub-continent pitches, with Adil Rashid being the only player to cover himself in any sort of glory, and their batting line-up was similarly listless.

Jamie Smith has been moved up to number three to try to bring something different to a team who were well below par in India.

England struggled against spin and face one of the best white-ball operators in the shape of Adam Zampa, who has taken 32 wickets in his last 11 one-day internationals against the Aussies.

Australia’s squad is weaker than it would normally be for a major tournament, with star pacers Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood all absent alongside the injured pair of Mitchell Marsh and Cameron Green.

Marcus Stoinis and David Warner have both retired so this team will have a very different feel from the one that lifted the last 50-over World Cup in 2023.

However on a pitch that looks set to favour the batters, Australia are fancied to thrive.

After a disappointing few years, Steve Smith looks to have rediscovered his form in a major way. The captain in Cummins’ absence, Smith has five centuries in his last nine matches in all formats. He surpassed 10,000 Test runs in Sri Lanka recently and averages 48.60 in tournament cricket.

To add to that Australia sport Travis Head, who has been one of the best batters in the world over the last 12 months, along with exciting youngster Jake Fraser-McGurk and the dangerous duo Marnus Labuschagne and Glenn Maxwell.

England have lost ten of their last 13 one-day internationals in Asia and Australia have won eight of the last ten meetings between these two teams in this format.
