Australia vs South Africa prediction

Australia claimed a tense three-wicket win over South Africa in their most recent ODI meeting in the 2023 World Cup semi-final in Kolkata.

The Proteas were reduced to 24-4 in the early stages of that game, so they will be relieved to face an Australia side missing star fast bowlers Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins at the Champions Trophy.

Both teams won their opening Group B fixtures, although the Aussies were in trouble at 136-4 chasing 352 against England on Saturday.

A brilliant unbeaten 120 from Josh Inglis saw the world champions home but they look vulnerable favourites against South Africa, who outclassed Afghanistan despite missing key batsman Heinrich Klaasen.

Before the World Cup semi-final defeat, South Africa had won their previous four ODIs against Australia by margins of 111 runs, 164 runs, 122 runs and 134 runs.

They are worth backing to boost their qualification hopes with victory in Rawalpindi, where Australia middle-order batter Alex Carey is an eye-catching price to top-score for his team.

Carey played a crucial role in the run-chase against England, scoring a classy 69, and made 74 and 77 not out against the same opponents in September's ODI series.

He struck 99 against South Africa in Centurion shortly before the 2023 World Cup and should be full of confidence after posting a career-best 156 in this month's second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
