Afghanistan vs South Africa prediction

Afghanistan make their Champions Trophy debut on Friday morning as they take on South Africa at the National Stadium in Karachi.

They are no longer the new kids on the block at the top level and have acquitted themselves well recently, winning eight of their last ten one-day internationals, including a 2-1 series win over the Proteas late last year.

South Africa will be without pace bowlers Anrich Nortje and Gerald Coetzee, who have both been ruled out through injury.

However they do have a rock-solid record at this tournament, reaching at least the semi-finals in five of their eight campaigns and winning the inaugural edition in 1998.

The Proteas were runners-up in last year’s T20 World Cup and reached the last four of the 50-over World Cup in 2023 so will have their sights set on a deep run this time .

The Karachi surface offered assistance to spinners in Pakistan’s loss to New Zealand and that could suit Afghanistan, who will lean heavily on their slower bowlers.

Rashid Khan is the pick of the bunch for the Afghan Atalans and looks a solid bet to be his team’s top wicket-taker.

The 26-year-old had the measure of this South African batting line-up when they met last year and could repeat the trick.

Khan has taken nine wickets at an average of just 9.55 in his last three one-day internationals against these opponents and looks a more than worthy favourite to star once again.
