Afghanistan vs England prediction
A lack of ruthlessness with bat and ball cost England in their Champions Trophy Group B opener against Australia and they must beat Afghanistan in Lahore to keep their semi-final hopes alive.
The Afghans were thrashed by South Africa in their first game, going down by 107 runs in Karachi, where Rahmat Shah (90) was the only one of their batters to reach 20.
England appeared to be on course for a huge total against Australia in Lahore, thanks to a stunning 165 from opener Ben Duckett.
However, middle-order men Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone failed to capitalise on that start before Australia recovered from 27-2 and 136-4 to chase down a target of 352.
Duckett's innings was a huge positive for England and he is worth backing to top-score again. Since moving to the top of the order in September's home ODI series against the Aussies, he has made 95, 32, eight, 63, 107, 32, 65, 34 and 165.
He loves batting in Pakistan, where he averages just under 62 after six Test appearances, and his tussle with the Afghan spinners should be fascinating.
Veteran Mohammad Nabi is an eye-catching price to be the top wicket-taker for the underdogs, having claimed 2-16 in six overs during the 2023 World Cup win over England in Delhi.
He dismissed South Africa opener Tony de Zorzi and number three Temba Bavuma in the defeat on Friday when star man Rashid Khan – the only other Afghan bowler to complete his ten overs – failed to pick up a wicket.
