Consistency could pay off for Esapekka Lappi in Sardinia
Ogier on the backfoot after Portugal crash
Starts 7pm Thursday
Ott Tanak is favourite to repeat last year's win in Rally Sardinia. The Estonian has won more stages than any other driver this season and took victory in Argentina in April.
The Toyota driver was an early casualty in Portugal last time but was in the lead after two stages and has a solid chance.
However, there may be better value in siding with Tanak's teammate Esapekka Lappi.
In his second year in top-class competition, 2016 WRC-2 champion Lappi has had a consistent season and sits fifth in the drivers standings.
Lappi, who won in his native Finland last season, has picked up extra points by winning the power stage at three of this season's six events, including last time out.
He took six stage wins in Sardinia last year and with his greater experience he could go close if he shows that kind of speed again.
Thierry Neuville took the lead in the championship with his win in Portugal. Five-time world champion Sebastien Ogier crashed out of that event and sits 19 points behind the Belgian.
