Confident Sale have the weapons to edge Newcastle

Falcons face tougher test on road

Josh Strauss made an impressive debut for Sale at Wasps

Newcastle's eighth-place finish in the Premiership last season was a big upturn after three consecutive years ending up second-bottom, and they kicked off with a bonus-point win at home last week.

But they face another step up against a confident Sale side who are smarting from defeat at Wasps and a hard-fought home win looks the likely outcome at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Sale won four of their last five home matches last term, a run that began with a 26-24 success over Newcastle and included victories over Wasps and Bath.

They opened their new campaign with a 50-35 defeat at Wasps last weekend, but last season's table-toppers are pretty much unbeatable at home and to score five tries was an encouraging sign.

The opening round was a feast of tries and points across the board although it could be a different story in the first match of round two as rain is forecast in the north-west.

Newcastle hit the ground running with a four-try victory over Worcester, who are now favourites to finish bottom after a disorganised display and Sale have the weapons to put up more of a fight.

Australian ace James O'Connor is again not included in the Sharks' line-up but scrum-half Faf de Klerk and back-rower Josh Strauss made feisty debuts and Sale showed enough resilience against an exceptional Wasps attack to suggest they can find a way to win at home.

Recommendation
Sale to win by one to 12 points
