Howell hopeful of another hot Hawaii showing
Sony Open first round
Sky Sports Golf, midnight Thursday
Charles Howell has made a pretty penny from the Sony Open throughout a lucrative career and this US Tour money-making machine should pick up another healthy cheque on Sunday.
The finishing position of Howell can be sold at 36 with Sporting Index for the fairly low-key gathering at Waialae Country Club, Hawaii, which seems more than fair considering he consistently features on the leaderboard there.
Howell finished fourth on his Sony debut way back in 2002, third in 2005, second in 2007, fourth in 2009, fifth in 2010, second in 2012, third in 2013, eighth in 2014, 13th in 2016 and eighth last year. His other performances there have been solid and annual Chucky Sony finishing-position sellers would be in serious clover.
There has been plenty of bright recent form from Howell, including fourth place in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in November, to suggest another bold Sony effort is coming.
Less optimistic about Sony success, although blessed with enormous courage and dignity, is Morgan Hoffmann. The 28-year-old announced just before Christmas that he has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. The brave New Jersey man says he will not let the disease stop him from continuing his US Tour career - he played the 2016-17 season while knowing he had the condition - but it would be phenomenal should he manage to challenge for glory this week.
Hoffmann has been put with Chad Campbell in a 72-hole match by Sporting Index. Campbell, a three-time US Tour champion who was runner-up in the 2006 Sony, seems a much more likely title contender.
