Byeong Hun An looks the man to lead Korean challenge

Poulter being afforded too much respect

Byeong Hun An is typically a strong ball-striker
1 of 1

Byeong Hun An adores desert golf and his record in European Tour events staged in the Gulf is hugely consistent, so it is a surprise to find him at odds-against for top Korean honours in the Abu Dhabi Championship.

An has finished fourth in both the Dubai tournaments – the DP World Tour Championship in 2015 and the Desert Classic in 2016 – and he was fifth in Abu Dhabi two years ago. Fifth place in the 2015 Qatar Masters was further evidence of his comfort in this region.

Tournament preview

An has not arrived in Abu Dhabi this time with much recent form in the book, but the 2015 Wentworth champion should still be odds-on to defeat Jeung-Hun Wang, Seungsu Han and Soomin Lee in the four-runner Korean market.

Wang posted only two top-ten finishes last year – and none since the first week of June – and his tee-to-green game is not in the same league as that of An. The best ball-strikers typically triumph at Abu Dhabi GC and An should see off his compatriots.

Betfred are showing Ian Poulter great respect in pairing him with Matthew Fitzpatrick in a 72-hole match. Poulter is a fading force at the age of 42, while Fitzpatrick is already a four-time European Tour champion at 23 and is one of the elite performers on this circuit.
