Josh Taylor vs Ekow Essuman prediction

Former undisputed super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor makes his return to the ring at welterweight to face European champion Ekow Essuman in front of a home Glasgow crowd and a points win looks the best bet.

The Scot has scored huge victories over Jose Carlos Ramirez, Regis Prograis, Viktor Postol and Ivan Baranchyk in an excellent career, but the Tartan Tornado has been out of action since he was comprehensively outpointed by Jack Catterall 12 months ago.

That loss followed a defeat to Teofimo Lopez and a fortunate - and underwhelming - victory over Catterall in 2022.

There are big questions for the 34-year-old to answer, a new weight to consider and it’s tricky to evaluate what level Taylor will be able to reach as he bids to justify quotes of 1-3.

The Edinburgh fighter will be a certainty if he can reach the level of his victories over Ramirez or Prograis, but on balance it’s difficult to think the 34-year-old will still be able to hit those heights.

Taylor can still do enough to beat Essuman, but the European champion is enjoying the best spell of his career and victories over Samuel Antwi and Chris Kongo rate as good domestic-level form.

The Engine hasn’t got the record to compete with a peak Taylor, but he may not be facing a top-level Scot tonight and Essuman is good enough to make the 34-year-old work.

At the prices, Taylor is fancied to get the job done, but the Tartan Tornado may not blow his rival away in Glasgow.
