Big fight preview
Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez clash in what promises to be a fantastic fight in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning.
It’s a chance for one of the fighters to be crowned the undisputed world super-lightweight champion with all four major belts on the line.
Taylor is the WBC and WBO champ, while Ramirez brings the WBA and IBF belts to the ring.
The Edinburgh banger is unbeaten in 17 professional fights and the Tartan Tornado has excellent wins against Regis Prograis, Ivan Baranchyk and Viktor Postol on his card.
Ramirez is also defending an unblemished record, with the American unbeaten in 26 bouts.
Both boxers have been in with Postol and you could argue that Taylor was the more impressive winner when tackling the Ukrainian.
Clearly, styles make fights, so perhaps it’s unwise to read too much into shared opponents. However, Ramirez only just got the job done against Jose Zepeda too and it’s possible that the Tartan Tornado could have his measure.
If Taylor decides to use his boxing skills, rather than standing and trading with the American, it could be a tough night for JCR. Ramirez would probably prefer a slugfest, but Taylor should be too cute for that and backing the Scot to win on points looks the value play.
There’s a fight card from Coventry on Saturday night and it could pay to back former world champion Carlos Molina to roll back the years.
The 37-year-old is at the end of his career but he may still have enough in the tank to see off Sam Eggington.
King has been fighting in his native Mexico of late and it’s difficult to gauge what level he is operating at, but he isn’t taking on a world-beater in Coventry.
Eggington has been defeated at British level by Ted Cheesman and Bradley Skeete, and the Savage was also fortunate to beat Dale Evans in 2015. Eggington is the younger boxer, but he has had some hard fights in his career and there isn’t much worth to his latest win over a now-retired Ashley Theophane.
The prices look to be massively overplaying Eggington’s chance and it’s worth taking a punt on Molina.
