Saul Alvarez has already won titles in three different weight divisions and the man they call Canelo has moved up two divisions for this bid to wrest the WBO light heavyweight belt from Sergey Kovalev.

Alvarez is rated a 1-4 favourite to win the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas but a better bet could be to back the Mexican to win via a decision.

Kovalev’s best days may be behind him. He has lost three of his last seven contests and took until the 11th round to stop London puncher Anthony Yarde in Chelyabinsk in August in what looked a real mismatch on paper.

The Russian was felled three times by Eleider Alvarez (no relation) last year in a seventh-round knockout loss, but he earned a decision victory in the rematch six months later.

Canelo is giving up four inches in height and five centimetres of reach to Kovalev, but the challenger is seven years younger and should prove too strong for the Russian.

However, only one of Alvarez’s last five fights has failed to go the distance.
