Galal Yafai vs Francisco Rodriguez Jr prediction

Galal Yafai returns to the ring following his stunning sixth-round stoppage victory over Sunny Edwards to face experienced Mexican Francisco Rodriguez Jr in front of a home Birmingham crowd.

The 32-year-old produced the best performance of his professional career to stop Edwards, winning the WBC Interim flyweight title and the 2020 Olympic gold medalist will be looking to push on to a full world title shot.

Rodriguez is a former unified world champion at minimumweight and the Mexican has contested bouts against top-level opponents Roman Gonzalez, Junto Nakatani and Kazuto Ioka.

However, he has faced only low-level bouts since he was comprehensively outpointed by Ioka in 2021 and Nakatani in 2022 and it’s not hard to have doubts over how much the 46-fight veteran has left to offer at this stage of his career.

Rodriguez was last seen in December, where he went eight rounds in a low-key fight with Josue Morales, a bout that was later ruled a no-contest.

The Mexican has been stopped only once in his career but judging Chihuas on efforts in the distant past appears a dangerous path given the Monterrey man hasn’t been involved in a meaningful fight for three years.

Backing Yafai to win by stoppage at 7-2 looks worthy of a wager.
