Fight preview

Carl Frampton has the chance to become a three-weight world champion in Dubai on Saturday night.

The Jackal challenges Jamel Herring for the WBO super-featherweight title and the Belfast hero looks worth supporting to make history.

Frampton has previously held the IBF and WBA super-bantamweight belts, as well as the WBA world featherweight title, and although he is stepping up to challenge the American the concerns are minimal.

Herring has won 22 of his 24 fights since turning professional in 2012, with his two defeats coming against Ladarius Miller and Denis Shafikov. However, neither of those fighters operate at the level that Frampton has mixed in and although Herring won the title from Masayuki Ito in 2019, Ito has gone on to be comprehensively beaten by Hironori Mishiro.

Only ten of Herring’s 22 wins have come via knockout and the majority of those were early in his career against extremely low-level opponents. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Frampton walk through the American, even at super-featherweight, and the Belfast banger has the workrate, accuracy and intelligence to cause the fighter nicknamed Semper Fi major problems.

Frampton has been in with excellent performers Scott Quigg, Leo Santa Cruz, Josh Warrington and Nonito Donaire and the Jackal has looked sprightly in his last two bouts against Tyler McCreary and Darren Traynor.

If anything, the desire to go again and motivation look bigger hurdles for Frampton than any physical demands, given the Jackal is a year younger than Herring.

The New York puncher has successfully defended his world title against Lamont Roach and Jonathan Oquendo, but Oquendo was disqualified in the third round and Frampton looks sure to give Herring more to think about.

Frampton has a few questions to answer, but they may not be as tricky as the prices suggest and backing the Belfast hero to shine again looks a value punt.
