Fulghum vs Melikuziev prediction

Las Vegas stages a high-stakes clash between Darius Fulghum and Bektemir Melikuziev in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The bout is a WBA super-middleweight eliminator and that’s an interesting side plot given the situation in the 168lbs division.

Undisputed super-middleweight king Canelo Alvarez, who takes on Terence Crawford in September, has four mandatory defences on the horizon and there will almost certainly be world title opportunities up for grabs in the near future.

A victory in Vegas would propel either fighter to the front of the WBA queue and Fulghum is certainly a boxer on the rise.

The Houston hitter has won all of his 14 professional contests and 12 of those victories have come by stoppage. That record doesn’t contain much substance in terms of the level of opponent, but DFG is a former National Golden Gloves champion and that gives him a solid foundation.

Melikuziev has mixed it at a higher level than Fulghum and the Uzbek fighter picked up the Olympic silver medal in the middleweight division at the 2016 Games in Rio.

However, Bully was stopped by Gabriel Rosado in his ninth professional contest, and while the 29-year-old has won eight bouts since that defeat, Melikuziev only just got the job done against David Stevens last time out.

Stevens doesn’t look anything above a domestic-level opponent and it’s a worry that Melikuziev could manage only a narrow split decision success over the 24-year-old in November.

The man from Uzbekistan is likely to have far more to deal with against Fulghum and it’s a gamble which may not pay off in Vegas.
